The ward takes SUCH good care of us. Really they are so so so nice. They are SO happy to have sisters. We just had a lady at church yesterday that said she was going to Costco and since she just loves the sisters she's going to pick us up some treats and snacks since she knows we don't have a lot of money. So sweet! Another example, we had a really bad storm come through Thursday night and lighting and storming possible flooding since we live so close to the water, but we slept right through it. We didn't even know it rained. We only knew there was some kind of storm because our clocks had been reset that night. But we woke up to a sweet voicemail from Brother Moss in the bishopric who is this really sweet old man. He's like "are you sisters okay in Langley? There is a really bad storm going on. Be careful for flooding, watch for lightning, let us know if you need anything or if you would feel safer staying with us tonight. Please don't hesitate to call, you will be in our prayers" It was the sweetest message! We saved it on our voicemail. When we called him back and told him that we didn't even know it stormed and we slept right through it, he was like what! You have got to be kidding me. Lol
So yeah the food prices are higher on the island because the food trucks have to pay extra money to come on the ferry to restock the food, so the prices in the stores are ridiculously high. The major grocery store on the island is called "The Goose". No lie.
Well this week has been really great! We went and visited LOTS of less active members, which is like 90% of the ward. Everyone says they come to South Whidbey to hide away and never be found. Most everyone we've visited has been so kind and gracious to us. They love having the missionaries over, they believe the church is true, but they don't want the commitments of coming to church every week or having a calling and prefer to be "religious" within the walls of their own home. It makes me sad because they just don't seem to get it. I wish they understood the real importance. So we prayerfully have been considering what all we should do to help them realize the importance of church and the sacrament.
We did a service project for the ward on Saturday, lots of yard work for this lady but only 4 people showed up, 6 including us. It was a lot of work but they were thankful for our help. Then after that we went and did service at one of our neighbors houses. So we did gardening and weeding and yard work for about 6+ hours that day. We met someone tracting and she wasn't interested in hearing our message, but when we offered to do some service for her she said we could come back Saturday and help her weed. We learned that she is actually LDS but inactive and doesn't plan to be active. But get this, she and her husband have 6 kids, all active and all served missions, boys and girls. That was very odd to me, but she is very intelligent and has a lot of knowledge in history and literature. We definitely will have her in our prayers.
Many people's houses are literally right on the water, but they have this arch thing to show their house number.
Here are the Washington spiders.... they are EVERYWHERE here. But seriously like everywhere. Its so gross. Lol they are all over houses, trees, anywhere they can build a web, they do. I am just amazed they are so big. All different colors. Its crazy. Very scary, I'm going to have to conquer my fear of spiders soon. Lol
This particular house had 300 steps to get to their house, can you imagine walking that everyday? The people said most of the houses that way have elevators but the elevator costs $20,000 so you have to have a lot of money, they stuck with stairs... crazy!
This is the neighborhood I live in. This is the view from the end of the street, so Beautiful!
Slugs are also another pretty common thing here. They are also everywhere all over the grass and roads. I'm pretty fascinated with them though! Some of them can get to be huge! My companion laughs because anytime we see one I have to stop and look at it, because some of them are seriously just so big!
